Casting with stones in place

Some stones can be set in the wax and cast in place. Others crack, cloud or change colour in the burnout. The stone picker tells you which is which, and keeps the burnout safe for the stones you choose.

The stone picker with a verdict for each stone

Picking stones

On the Investing & burnout tab, use Stones in place in Your setup. The stone picker opens on the Plan the day step, with 29 stones you can search.

Each stone shows a verdict, with the reason and its source:

  • Castable in place
  • Test first
  • Set after casting

What changes

  • The highest safe flask temperature is the lowest limit of the stones you ticked, and never above 630 °C (1166 °F), the limit for stone-in-place investments.
  • The burnout cycle is held under that limit. Steps above it stop at the limit, ramps keep their rate, and the top hold is at least 2 hours so the pattern still burns out.

Warnings

You're warned about stones that can't be cast in place, stones to test first, and diamond with CZ (because of boric acid). A banner on the Burnout step and the burnout notes remind you never to quench a flask with stones in it.

The rules and 27 sources are in the Rules for casting with stones in place fold-out.
